Benefits
Why heat and cold feel so good.
An honest look at what people enjoy — and what the science can and can't say yet.
What is a sauna?
A warm wooden room heated to a high, dry temperature. You sit, relax and let the warmth do its work, leaving whenever you choose.
What is a cold plunge?
A short dip in cold water. It's an invigorating contrast to the heat — and at DuoTherma it's always optional.
What is contrast therapy?
The term generally refers to alternating between heat and cold. People do it in many ways; there's no single correct routine.
What it may offer
Benefits, in balanced words.
- Many people find sauna relaxing, and it may help ease feelings of tension and muscle stiffness.
- Cold immersion may help reduce muscle soreness after strenuous exercise and support perceived recovery.
- Some people find the ritual helps them switch off — evidence on sleep and stress is still developing.
- Studies have linked regular sauna use with certain heart-health outcomes, but these are associations and don't prove that sauna causes them.
Everyone is different, and results vary.
New here?
What to expect as a beginner.
Start gently. Spend as long in the sauna as feels comfortable, step out whenever you like, and only try the cold plunge if you want to. Many first-timers simply enjoy the heat and the garden. Bring your own towel — showers and lockers are available.
Safety first
- • Cold water can trigger a sudden cold-shock response.
- • If you have heart or circulation conditions, blood pressure concerns or other health concerns, seek medical advice before taking part.
- • Stay hydrated, follow venue guidance and leave the sauna or plunge straight away if you feel unwell.
- • Never hold your breath or do forceful breathing exercises in or near water.
- • The cold plunge is optional — you can enjoy the sauna on its own.
- • Regular cold immersion straight after strength training may interfere with muscle and strength gains for some people.
- • This experience does not replace medical care.
